Green school update
We are currently working on our Biodiversity Green Flag.
Last year Ms Cronin and Ms Keane’s class did a fantastic set of experiments for Science Blast. Since then we have designated the area between the new building and the tennis courts are a No Mow Zone. This will increase the Biodiversity of plant and animal life in the school. The slopping area behind 4th and 5th class is also being allowed become a wild area.
Recently we have put bird feeders up around the school and planted Daffodils in the No Mow Zone. A Large bug hotel has allow been put in place to help the insects and pollinators in the area.
6th Class are also participating in 2 citizen science surveys.
.For January and February we are doing the Irish Garden Bird Survey is you would like to participate the link is here. https://birdwatchireland.ie/our-work/surveys-research/research-surveys/irish-garden-bird-survey/
We also had a visit to 5th and 6th class from Aisling Natoff explaining about the importance of Biodiversity which was very informative.
Over the coming months we are also going to participate in the National Biodiversity Backyard Biodiversity survey . The link is here if you would like to get involved. https://biodiversityireland.ie/surveys/backyard-biodiversity/

We have successfully achieved our 5th Green Flag for Sustainable Travel.
All the hard work that has been put into our green flag has paid off. We have been successful in getting our Sustainable Travel Flag. Well done. I told them about how our committee worked, checking for the greenest class each week, Our Walk on Wednesdays, our poster competition and the walkability audit we did with Ellen Murphy among many other things.
Ellen will hopefully pop into school to see that we are keeping up the good work when it is safe to do so.
You have all worked very hard and everyone played their part. You should be very proud of yourselves.
Below is the letter we received from the green schools manager.
We’ll celebrate getting the flag when we are back and it arrives.
Congratulations

We are working on our 4th Green Flag for Water Conservation.
We are now in the final phases of completing water conservation flag.
We are checking the water meter every day to see how much water we are using.
We have put 500ml bottles in each of the cisterns in the old school building to reduce the amount of water used in each flush. This should reduce the amount of water used by about 150 litres per week.
The parents from second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth have completed a water conservation survey and we will be making the results available soon. Thanks to all the parents for giving their time to fill the survey out and returning them quickly.
We are also organising a day of action to raise awareness and promote water conservation in the school. 5th class have been working hard designing water conservation board games and have written a water saving song.
Thank you for support and we will update you again soon.

As part of this each classroom is using a tick chart to monitor how often their toilets are flushed every day / week and how often their hands are washed in the toilets and in the classroom. This work is being carried out under the guidance of Mr. Verling.

Councillor John Paul O’Shea did the honours of raising the flag and pupils from 5th Class spoke about the work undertaken to achieve the flag and also the work that will commence to achieve the next flag for water conservation. Well done to Mr. Verling and the pupils of 5th class for their excellent work and efforts in achieving the flag.
